LATINAS/CHICANAS
IN THE USA:
VOICES CROSSING BORDERS
Dr. José F. Bañuelos-Montes. Associate Professor of Spanish. Modern Languages Department. Roanoke College.
Prof. Manuel Gómez-Navarro. Visiting Professor of Spanish. Modern Languages Department. Roanoke College.
"Latina/Chicana: Voices Crossing Borders" is a poetry recital commemorating Latina/Chicana poets who have crossed political and cultural boundaries and face the reality of (re)shaping their identities. The poets recited come from different countries in the Caribbean, North America, Central America and South America. With their unique stylistic approach and perspective, these poetic voices learn to integrate to a new culture and language. Their poems are an opportunity to create awareness of the rich cultural diversity and to celebrate difference and unity in a globalized society.
Professor Carolina Viera, Assistant Professor of Spanish Linguistics, will give a talk on “Bilingualism in the USA”.
Spanish majors and minors will recite Latina/Chicana poems from memory. They are a combination of heritage, native and non-native speakers who are dedicating their time to participate in the Women’s Month Forum 2014: Edyth Cisneros, Cam Croy, Lydia Delamatta, Jill Disbro, Kelsey Engle, Hannah Gardner, Sandy Hernández, Cam Linsley, Andrew Miller, Daniela Velásquez, Margot Warner and Sumi Yi.
